So we have all seen a home that someone has smoked in, has that beautiful yellow tint to the walls, take pictures off the wall and you see a nice outline of every picture that was hung. Well feast your eyes on this!
At first I started with a commercial grade paint sprayer to coat the walls with a Kilz primer. I have had great success with Kilz in the past and didn’t think it would have any problems covering. After spraying 3 coats I noticed the coverage wasn’t working as planned, so I abandoned the sprayer and rolled the walls. After 5 coats of paint I finally achieved a nice, uniform finish.
Then I attacked the stairwell….
What you are looking at is the 1 coat of white paint over years of smoke damage. While it looks like the paint is covering in the picture I can assure you when it dried it was disapointing. No kidding, this took 8 coats of paint! The end result was worth it.
Rolling the paint did take more time but the coverage was much better. Spraying has a lot of positives and works great for trim and doors but for covering and priming walls I really feel rolling the paint is the best way to go.
